Last week we were thrilled to welcome Zita Rojkovich from Tempos Vega Sicilia to Belfast to show their world class wines from both Spain and Hungary.

The evening started with the Oremus Mandolas 2014, an outstanding dry white Tokaji made from Furmint. Macan 2012 Rioja, a joint venture with Bodegas Benjamin Rothchild, showed elegance and style. The Bodegas Pintia 2011 was a powerhouse of concentrated dark berry fruit and savoury notes.

We moved to Ribera de Duero for the next 3 wines. The 100% Tempranillo Bodegas Alion Reserva 2012 was rich, full bodied and textured with elegant silkiness on the palate. The stunning Bodegas Vega Sicilia Valbuena 2011 had  amix of red and black berry fruits, with cinnamon, vanilla and toasted brioche coming through on the exceptional length. The last red was the jewel in Vega Sicilia’s crown – Unico 2008. Made from 94% Tempranillo and 6% Cabernet Sauvignon this complex wine showed blackberries, blackcurrants, leather, pencil shavings and spice. It was full bodied. smooth and still youthful. This is a wine with a great potential for ageing.

For the final two wines we moved back to Hungary for their beautiful dessert wines. The Oremus Late Harvest 2013 had lovely light orange and honey notes, making it a perfect partner to light fruit based desserts.  Oremus 3 puttonyos Tokaji 2009 was rich with orange marmalade, dry honey and a sweetness that was perfectly balanced with a refreshing acidity.

This was an exceptional tasting and we hope all who attended enjoyed the experience as much as we did.

Look out for future events.
