This week we have enjoyed some fantastic Italian wines at tastings tutored by DWS favourite Michael Palij MW.
We had the pleasure of enjoying wines from some of the more “off the beaten track” regions, including Abruzzo, Marche, Sicily & Emilia Romagna. From the light citrus flavours of Terra Firma Catarratto to the full & savoury Nicodemi Montepulciano d’Abruzzo, each of the wines tasted proved again just how special wines from Italy can be. As always, Michael’s passion and enthusiasm for his specialist subject shone through leaving everyone with the feeling they had met the winemakers behind the wine. Last night’s tasting finished on the joyful note of Vittorio Graziano Fontana di Boschi Lambrusco, which proved to be very popular, and is probably like no Lambrusco you’ve tasted before!
Terra Firma Catarratto, Sicily
Saladini Pilastri Falario, Marche
Terrana Trebbiano d’Abruzzo, Abruzzo Red
Terra Firma Nero d’Avola, Sicily
Saladini Pilastri Rosso Piceno, Marche
La Pieve Chianti, Tuscany

Little Beauty is a bespoke, multiple award winning independent winery from the unique Waihopai Valley, Marlborough, New Zealand. It is made with good old Kiwi passion and pride.
2008 was only the first vintage and it is only ever going to be available as a limited release. In fact, so limited, the annual production volume represents a tiny 0.0005% of the total UK market share!
We are delighted to welcome back Little Beauty’s co-owner Fleur McCree to Direct Wine Shipments to showcase these fantastic wines.
Turkey & Chicken
In general chicken & turkey work very well with Chardonnay. Richer, lightly oaked styles go well with a roast, for example white Burgundy, while the classic match for red drinkers is Bordeaux. For Christmas dinner with all the trimming you may want to consider Rhône reds such as Chateauneuf-du-Pape, Reserva or Gran Reserva Rioja, Chianti or for new world Pinot Noir.
Duck & Goose
Both duck and goose have a high fat content & therefore work best with fragrant wines with good acidity; good quality Pinot Noirs are ideal. For fans of white wine try with Chenin Blanc, Pinot Gris or Riesling.
Beef or Venison
When looking at matching wine & red meat the obvious choice is red wine. Classic choices include Cabernet & Merlot based Bordeaux, full bodied Italian or Spanish reds & from the New World, a rich Malbec or Shiraz.
